Destroy anyone's computer : zip bomb
A zip bomb is also kown as Decompression Bomb or Zip of Death. It is a malicious archive file created for a crash useless program trying to access it. A zip bomb is a small file is easy to transport and avoid suspicion. Mostly zip bomb is measured in kilobytes.
When a zip bomb is activated it fills up the complete storage of by decompressing into a very large amount of data.
For instance, there is a file called 42.zip which is 42 kilobytes in size but when unzipped, it is 42 petabytes - twelve orders of magnitude larger.
Zip bomb is used to disable antivirus software so that virus sent afterward could get into system undetected. When zip bomb is unzipped its contents are more than what the system can handle. This file easily unpacks into hundreds of gigabytes of garbage data.
42.zip file contains 42 kilobytes of compressed data with five layers of nested zip files in sets of 16. Every bottom layer archive containing a 4.3-gigabyte file for a total of 4.5 petabytes of uncompressed data.
How To Create Zip Bomb
- First, open up a text editor like notepad.
- Now start typing lots of zeros (0).
- Now select the whole thing and copy and paste. And paste. And paste. And the past.
- Again select the whole thing and copy and paste. And paste. And paste. And the past.
- Type zeros until when your text file size reaches 10MB.
- After that close this file and go to the folder where the file is saved a copy this zeros file and make lots of copy in this folder.
- Now open a command prompt and locate the path where this file is stored and run below command.
copy /b *.txt combined.txt
- After running above command all the zeros files are combined into one file and the size of the file is more than 1GB.
- Now open compression software like WinRar and compress this text file.
- You will find that it will be compressed to very small size (nearly 1MB ). Because of the simple construction of the file as the text file contains 1gb of the same text.
That's it now your zip bomb is ready. Send this zip bomb to your friends and when a zip bomb is decompressed computer drive is fill up the complete storage. A 42.zip file is 42kb in size but when unzipped, it is 42 petabytes - twelve orders of magnitude larger.
